Beyond Google: Should You Start PPC Campaigns in Other Networks?

Although not the first to introduce PPC advertising, Google has become the leader for advertisers looking to capitalize on pay per click campaigns. However, the sheer popularity of Google's Adwords program means that you face steeper competition in bidding for keywords, which translates into greater costs.

Can other search engines and networks work for your PPC campaign? While Google may be the king of traffic volume, you may be more interested in other PPC aspects, such as:

  • Conversion Rate - Some networks may offer higher click and sale conversion rates due to the customer base that use them.
  • Keyword Competition - Many general keywords have a high bid rate due to the competitiveness of the keyword. Other search engines may be able to offer lower rates on certain keywords due to lower competition.
  • Click Pricing - The top search engines will charge top dollar for each click. Other networks may offer competitive pricing that is easier on your budget.
  • User Interface - Some search engines put their PPC ads in locations not optimal for users to find them. The best search engines and PPC networks will offer a clear interface that displays easy-to-read results and places PPC ads in prominent screen locations.

What other networks might be a good fit for your PPC advertising strategy? Here is a look at the other "top" search engines that offer quality PPC results.

Microsoft Adcenter
Microsoft's paid search advertising programs, Adcenter, offers a number of benefits, including one of the highest conversion rates in the industry. According to Microsoft, their focused approach to PPC advertising on their search engine, Bing, produces a higher rate of visitors per click than Google. Microsoft Adcenter also is known for better pricing for keywords and has a lower competition for general keywords.

Yahoo Search Marketing
After Google, the Yahoo! search engine produces the next highest traffic volume. With such high search traffic, you can be sure that your well-designed PPC campaign will see results on Yahoo Search Marketing. It also has an attractive high conversion rate. However, with more traffic comes more keyword competition, and Yahoo! has plenty of competition, making it more expensive to bid on widely used keywords.

Other PPC Competitors
Other high-quality PPC advertising networks include Looksmart.com and SearchFeed.com. Each of these networks have powerful click advertising programs with high conversion rates, good click pricing, and reasonable keyword competition.

Which networks should you choose for your PPC campaigns? It depends on what your PPC goals are and what you want to achieve from each network. You can always run trails using the same keywords on different networks to determine which one provides the best results for your business. You may find that your PPC dollar may be best spent on other networks than Google.
