How to Properly Optimize Your Video for the Search Engines

Video marketing has become a cornerstone for many successful online companies. Whether your company is large or small, you can take advantage of the online video medium to gain exposure, increase traffic, and boost your bottom line - as long as your video is viewed!

To improve the chances that your video will be seen by the masses, consider these tips to help optimize your videos in the search engines.

Create a Great Title
A good title is always important not only to gain the interest of a viewer, but also the favor of a search engine crawler. Your video marketing title should contain at least one important keyword or phrase that search engines can use to categorize and rank your video page. A title should not be long; an average of 5 to 8 words is normal.

Always Add Keyword Tags
Correctly labeling your video with keywords and phrases will also help search engines understand the focus of your video. When search engines find your keyword tags, it will be better capable of categorizing and presenting your video marketing message to internet searchers.

Do not over-tag your video, however. "Keyword stuffing" is frowned upon by most search engines, and they may not rank your video page at all if the bots find too many keywords.

Write Keyword-Rich Descriptions
Your video upload page may also have a place for a short description. As mentioned, don't fill or "stuff" the description with keywords. Intersperse keywords in the description, but make it short, succinct, and helpful to search engines for categorization.

Use Accurate File Names
If you host your own video, or upload a video marketing file to a web server, always use a descriptive name for the file. Rather than a generic file name such as "816637_VM.wmv", use something more descriptive, such as "how_to_color_easter_eggs.mov" to aid in your search engine endeavors.

Submit to Many Video Hosting Sites
YouTube may be the leader in video hosting, but it is not the only major video hosting site. Just like you can submit articles to a number of directories, your video should be posted on a variety of hosting sites. This can help with search results and be more effective in encouraging more viewers to watch your video marketing messages.

Use RSS Feeds
Don't forget the power of RSS subscription services. Try to convince new viewers to sign up for RSS feeds. Every time you post a new video, they will receive a notification. The more frequently RSS subscribers watch your videos, the more likely search engines will rank your videos on search results.

Video marketing doesn't just mean trying to get people to watch you. It is about directing traffic and getting more people to your website, ultimately converting a visit into a sale. Use these video marketing optimization techniques and you will soon see more viewers turn into customers.
